Uh, what happened to the path? The rice fields gave way to the jungle.
Even though there wasn't a lot out here (not that you could see from the "path" anyway) it was still a pretty heavily traveled area -- not necessarily in volume, but certainly in weight. Below is a photograph of some traffic. The people were left a few centimeters of space on one side or the other of the mud pit, while the carabaus (like the one saying, "Moo", on the first page) dredged a path down through the middle of it dragging sleds filled with jungle stuff.
