After living on my brother's sailboat in the Philippines for several months the lifestyle started to get to me.
Same old paradise day after day. I decided to take a vacation. I wandered around the countryside for a few weeks and ended up in the hometown of my brother's girlfriend, Mary Ann. Mary Ann's family was from the village of Ngolos (NEW-los), Eastern Samar. The village is on a rather historical island. Calicoan Island was taken over by MacArthur's forces during World War II, and it was from there the land attack on the Japanese in Leyte, across the Leyte Gulf from Calicoan Island, was launched. Remnants of old buildings and structures can be found in many places on the island while just thrashing your way through the jungle.
