The folks at the university in Cosenza had a few portable seismic stations
worth of equipment of their own. One of stations that they were about to shut
down was in the town of Cocozzello, Calábria which you probably will
not find on any map. To find it all you have to do is look between the towns
of Bisignano and Acri, which you may not find on any map either, unless you
zoom way in on an online map, or something.
We set out for the site with Dr. Guerra and Guido in the lead.
We had a GPS coordinate for the station that was quite adequate for letting us know when we drove right past the place. The building where the station was located was down a steep, narrow driveway that could hardly be seen from the main road.
The building had a rock floor and was now used for storage. That worked out well.
There was no electricity in the building so a solar panel was placed outside. Naturally it was raining cats and dogs, and it was getting dark while we were there, so we could not really verify that it was going to do its job. Notes about these kinds of things are made so they can be checked on subsequent visits.
Below is John, Angelo Fusaro, and Dr. Guerra. Angelo was the owner of the
property and grew up in the house that we installed the sensor in along with
five brothers and sisters. Now he looks like a real Italian, eh?
