Rising up from an ancient medieval village is Altomonte, Calábria which looked like a very nice town. It is situated in the center of a natural amphitheater. To the south is Pre-Sila mountains, to north-west the Pollino mountian range, and to the east are rolling hills towards the plains of Púglia and the Gulf of Sibari. There are many museums and art galleries in the town.
This statue was erected to commemorate the new millennium. The "old"millennium is holding up the "new" millennium.
The station was placed on top of a small hill about two kilometers south of town in the middle of an up and coming olive tree grove.
Scratched into the plaster just above the doorway was the number "1941". I am pretty sure it was not the address.
The GPS antenna was attached to a tree next to the building.
Our contact in Altomonte was one of the local artists Francesco Pacienza. He was a friend of another one of Dr. Guerra's students that we just happened to bump into while working in the office at the university. Below Francesco is attaching the solar panel to the roof and moving some tiles around to fill in some holes.
We dug down in to the dirt floor until we reached a rock base to put the sensor on. The rest of the equipment was spread out along one wall. All of the equipment is weatherproof which was a good thing. For the most part the roof was not weatherproof.
We finished up back in Altomonte after sunset and then hit the road leaving Calábria for Grottaminarda.
