Tarik and katig are the outriggers. The tarik are the poles that are tied to the top of the boat and that stick out on either side. The katig are the floats that sit in the water. Given the design of your basic bangka it's a fact that if one of the katig fills with water the boat will fall over and sink. That provided a relatively modest amount of incentive to make sure that the katig would not fill with water.
Normally katig are made of bamboo, but the ones on Sharkbait would be made of PVC pipe sealed on both ends. In the event that the boat ran aground on some reef, and the pipes were cracked, we filled the pipes with many small pieces of styrofoam. Smart, eh?
